Introduction

 

In general, research writing provides one with the opportunity to delve into a variety of references on a specific topic.  In this class you will employ the research process to develop a paper on a theme related to the field of nursing. The research experience, moreover, in this class will teach you how to use the American Psychological Association Format (APA) and  how healthcare texts function in the research process. Sources for your research project, moreover, may come from print as well as non-print materials such as books, newspaper articles, magazine articles, internet materials, movies, artifacts, museum presentations, interviews, oral presentations, and medical charts. My goal is to explore research writing in healthcare and to develop a literature review on a topic related to healthcare.

 

 In this course, moreover, you will conduct a detailed searched into one topic. The instructor will provide a sequential plan for developing a research paper. The research focus for the project will be related to the field of health care. You will develop a topic that will result in the writing of one seven page (7-9) paper.

Students will explore research writing in healthcare.  

 

 

 

 

Objective:

 

English 300  is a writing course designed to give students intensive experience in research oriented projects and writing analytic papers; teach students how to understand in theory and practice the research process; teach students how to plan and write longer compositions.

Course Plan:

 

Week One:

 

·      In Class Meeting: Introduction to Course (Students will meet for two hours)

 

 

Week Two:

 

·      Review of APA Format and Paper

·      Purdue Owl Power point on APA Style

·      Read Sample APA Paper

·      All presentations will be available on Canvas. 

 

 

 

Week Three:

 

·      Writing a Proposal

·      View Proposal Power-point presentation

·      Sample proposal provided online.

·      Read sample paper

 

 

 

Week Four: Proposal Due

·      View power-point presentation “Literature Review”

·      Article: Read sample literature review (2).  

 

 

Week Five:

·      Working Bibliography Due

·      View power-point: Gathering Sources/ Research Assignment Due

·      View power-point on the outline

·      Exercise: Develop an outline for your preliminary research.

 

 

Week Six:  

·      Outline for the paper (Topic) Due

·      Working Bibliography Due

·      APA Exercise: Writing Using the APA Style

·      Writing the Introductory Paragraph

 

Week Seven:

·      View Power-point presentation on “Writing the Paper”

 

Week Eight: Rough Draft Due

·      Rough Draft of Paper Due/ Research Paper Conference

·      Students must attend the research paper conference.

·      “Research Paper Check List” due at the time of the conference

 

Week Nine: Work on Paper

 

Week Ten:

Final paper due

 

 

 

 

 

Course Assignments: 

 

One research project. It will include the following:

 

   

       Proposal and Research Assignment (Working  Bibliography)

       Outline 

       Literature Review

 

 

Please Note:

 

       Please type all assignments.

       Assignments must be handed in during the week that they are due.

       The research project must be one that has been developed by the student.

       Plagiarize papers will receive a failing grade.
